How To Have Websites Built For You The Cheap Way

Normally, if you want to have professional designers custom build your site, you must be prepared to dish out at least a few hundred dollars. All this can change if you know where to find the best deals, the best designs for the lowest price. Here’s a rough guide:

First, you must understand that it is a rip off to get companies to design websites for you. Have you ever seen those advertisements in newspaper classified ad sections that offer a 5-page website at $500? These companies are established companies with physical locations, therefore they have to increase the amount they charge to pay off some overheads: office rent, designer’s wages, advertising costs and so on.

Therefore, it would be wise to find freelance designers who work from home. These people are often working from home so they do not have a high operation cost like that of a company. On the other hand, they will be able to design images with quality similar to those of designers from big companies, so it’s a “no-brainer” choice.

However, choose freelancers with care. The best way to do this would be to go to elance.com. There, you can post the abstract of your project and get thousands of freelancers to bid on your project, so you will surely get the best deal. On top of that, you will be able to choose the designers based on their experience, past transactions and ratings, so your value for money is secured.

Another route you can take is to design your website yourself. Think about it, if you only need 5 simple pages to present some simple information, why waste hundreds of dollars for it? Just spend a little time to sit down and do it yourself. You’ll be able to design your own sites even if you do not know a single line of HTML code with the help of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) programs such as Microsoft Frontpage, Macromedia Dreamweaver and so on.

Good Design Practices

Your website is where your business resides — it’s like the headquarter of an offline company. Hence, it is important to practise good design principles to make sure your site reaches out to the maximum number of visitors and sells to as many people as possible.

Make sure you have clear directions on the navigation of your website. The navigation menu should be uncluttered and concise so that visitors know how to navigate around your website without confusion.

Reduce the number of images on your website. They make your site load very slowly and more often than not they are very unnecessary. If you think any image is essential on your site, make sure you optimize them using image editing programs so that they have a minimum file size.

Keep your text paragraphs at a reasonable length. If a paragraph is too long, you should split it into seperate paragraphs so that the text blocks will not be too big. This is important because a block of text that is too large will deter visitors from reading your content.

Make sure your website complies to web standards at www.w3.org and make sure they are cross-browser compatible. If your website looks great in Internet Explorer but breaks horribly in Firefox and Opera, you will lose out on a lot of prospective visitors.

Avoid using scripting languages on your site unless it is absolutely necessary. Use scripting languages to handle or manipulate data, not to create visual effects on your website. Heavy scripts will slow down the loading time of your site and even crash some browsers. Also, scripts are not supported across all browsers, so some visitors might miss important information because of that.

Use CSS to style your page content because they save alot of work by styling all elements on your website in one go.

How To Put Up Great Looking Web Pages

Dear Friend:

I’ve got to tell you, when Michael Nicholas first showed me what he was working on, I was completely blown away!

I don’t think he really understood the impact this 123 WysiWyg HTML Editor would have on business owners, entrepreneurs, and webmasters around the world who want to build and edit great looking webpages and websites, quick and easy.

“If you can use a word processor, you can create
and edit great looking webpages fast!”

I’m always on the lookout for internet business tools that make building and profiting from your websites even easier.

And one of the most important tools you’ll ever want to have is an HTML editor that makes your pages look exactly like you want them to look, without having to pay big bucks to web design people to create sites for you and then to make all the expensive edits you need as time goes by.

Now you and I both know there are all kinds of HTML editors available to choose from, probably in the thousands by now. All the way from the BIG guy software companies to the little guy who writes software just for himself and few of his computer geek buddies and gives it away for free with no support.

The problem is the BIG guy software companies have made their HTML editors way too complex for most users and it’s very confusing to learn, and the little guy editors just don’t have enough features to get the webpages done right, or they don’t work at all.

Just imagine for second, what if you could…

build webpages as easily as you use your word processor?

edit webpages without having to depend on a webmaster?

add subscriptions forms and other scripts into your webpages without ever having to look at one line of confusing HTML code?

have complete control of how your webpages look, and know how they will look before you upload them to your website?

finally have the ability to create and edit your own webpages using a truly easy-to-use What You See Is What You Get HTML Editor?

Sounds great, doesn’t it?

“Let me show you a quick screen shot of what “123 WysiWyg HTML Editor” looks like… it’s the most complete and
simple to use HTML Editor you’ll ever use…”

How to Design a Website from Pre-Designed Templates Using Microsoft FrontPage

How to Design a Website from Pre-Designed Templates Using Microsoft FrontPage

I want to teach with this article practical ways you can design your website from pre-designed templates using Microoft Frontpage.

STEPS

1. You are going to launch the template of your choice from your template folder. I believe you should have your pre-designed templates already in a folder onyour computer. There are many free website temltaes now on the internet. Search or “free website templates on the search engines. You are only required to click on it.

2.              Yo should  now click on it.

3. This is a very important stage. Usually, there are always 3 folders in any template folder. You are going to click on the saved html file with the internet explorer logo. This is the copy web page that you are going to edit to build your own web pages. The image folder contains the images that you may need to use for your web pages. The owners or the producers of this template included these images for your use but the images may not be relevant for your website. So it is not compulsory for you to use them. I don’t always use the third folder and most templates don’t even contain this third folder.

4. You can now click on the saved html folder to launch your template.

5.  You are now going to look for the “Edit With Microsoft Front Page” button on the title bar and click on it.

 6. When you do this, your template is launched straightaway in Microsoft FrontPage environment if you have Microsoft FrontPage installed on your computer.

7. You can begin to edit the web page to suit your own purpose. Editing this page only requires you to simply delete the original wordings and replace with your very own letterings. You can give it a trial and see how easy it is. You don’t even need to format anything. You may however do some little formatting to suit your own purpose.

8.              You can also either insert one of the images in the image folder I mentioned earlier on if it agrees with the purpose of your web page or you can make use of your very own saved image.

9.              You are now going to save your web page. Go to “Edit” and then “Save As”.

10.  The “Save As” dialog box appears and you are to save in the folder of your choice, preferably a special folder you must have created on your desktop earlier on. Name the file “index.html”- this is actually the name you must give to the first page of any website you are designing. It is the Home Page, the page visitors to your website see first when they type your web URL into the browser. You may or may not include the .html extension since you already have “Web Pages” displayed in the “Save as type” box. You are also expected to change the title of your web page by clicking “Change title…” tab. The page title is the message visitors to your site see in the browser window when they browse through your site. When you must have done all of these, you can then click “Save”

11.  It is also very important for me to teach you the functions of these three buttons that are located at the bottom of the Microsoft Front Page” page – “Normal”, “Html”, “and Preview”. All this while. You have been working in the “Normal” environment. When you click the “Html” button and what you have displayed is html – hypertext markup language that are been written automatically for you as you work in the “Normal” environment. The “Preview” environment when clicked upon allows you to see how your web page will look like when you upload it to the server.

12.  Let me tell you how you can create a new page. You can click on “File”, then “New”. A new page is launched immediately you do this. You must however name all the other pages of your website like “About Us”, “Services”, and “Contact Us” and also include some other common information for all the pages on the first page or index page before you create other pages.

13.   You can move from one page to the other by just clicking on it. Now if you want the common contents of “index page” to appear on the second page. You can do this by simply going back to the index page and then click on the “html” tab I metioned earlier on at the bottom of the page. Copy all the codes (press Ctrl A and then Ctrl C) and then switch over to the second page, click the “html” tab, then paste directly into it. You can then click on the “Normal” tab to see what the second page has turned into. You have all the contents of the first page on the second page. You can then edit this page to suit the purpose of the page. You can do these for as many pages you want to create.

14.  I want to assume you have created all the pages you needed for your website and you now need to link the pages i.e. you want your visitors to be able to click on “About Us” tab on the home page and go immediately to the “About Us” page. This is a very important activity when you design a website and you just must get it right. This is however the simple process – Go to the home page and highlight “Home” and then you either click on the “insert hyperlink” button on the title bar or you press “Ctrl K” or you go to “insert”, then “insert hyperlink”. This brings up the “insert hyperlink” dialog box.

15.  In this box: In the “Text to Display Box”, the text “Home” is already displayed. You can then click on the “index.html (open)” and then click okay. NB: You are clicking on this because you are actually linking “Home” on your home page to your home page in your website. Don’t loose sight of the fact that you must be in the right folder or (the folder where you saved your file) as you carry out the linking process. Now we are now going to look at the second thing you have to do as you hyperlink your web pages. Click Okay when you are through with this box.

16.  You can now go back to the home page or first page and carry out the same process for the “About Us” tab i.e. you should highlight “About Us”, click “insert hyperlink” button and then click on “aboutus (open)” file and then click okay. You have just linked the “About Us” tab on your homepage to the about us file.

17. You will repeat this process for all the tabs on your first page and then go to the second page (About Us) and carry out the same process. This same process should be carried out for all the other pages you must have created.  You only have to do this for the common information or pages on all your pages.  NB: You should remember to save your file (Ctrl S) after hyper linking any page. You can also make it a point of duty to test your work by previewing in browser.

Analyzing Website Traffic

Analyzing Website Traffic
Analyzing your web traffic statistics can be an invaluable
tool for a number of different reasons. But before you can
make full use of this tool, you need to understand how to
interpret the data.

Most web hosting companies will provide you with basic web
traffic information that you then have to interpret and
make pertinent use of. However, the data you receive from
your host company can be overwhelming if you don’t
understand how to apply it to your particular business and
website. Let’s start by examining the most basic data - the
average visitors to your site on a daily, weekly, and
monthly basis.

These figures are the most accurate measure of your
website’s activity. It would appear on the surface that the
more traffic you see recorded, the better you can assume
your website is doing, but this is an inaccurate
perception. You must also look at the behavior of your
visitors once they come to your website to accurately gauge
the effectiveness of your site.

There is often a great misconception about what is commonly
known as “hits” and what is really effective, quality
traffic to your site. Hits simply means the number of
information requests received by the server. If you think
about the fact that a hit can simply equate to the number
of graphics per page, you will get an idea of how overblown
the concept of hits can be. For example, if your homepage
has 15 graphics on it, the server records this as 15 hits,
when in reality we are talking about a single visitor
checking out a single page on your site. As you can see,
hits are not useful in analyzing your website traffic.

The more visitors that come to your website, the more
accurate your interpretation will become. The greater the
traffic is to your website, the more precise your analysis
will be of overall trends in visitor behavior. The smaller
the number of visitors, the more a few anomalous visitors
can distort the analysis.

The aim is to use the web traffic statistics to figure out
how well or how poorly your site is working for your
visitors. One way to determine this is to find out how long
on average your visitors spend on your site. If the time
spent is relatively brief, it usually indicates an
underlying problem. Then the challenge is to figure out
what that problem is.

It could be that your keywords are directing the wrong type
of visitors to your website, or that your graphics are
confusing or intimidating, causing the visitor to exit
rapidly. Use the knowledge of how much time visitors are
spending on your site to pinpoint specific problems, and
after you fix those problems, continue to use time spent as
a gauge of how effective your fix has been.

Additionally, web traffic stats can help you determine
effective and ineffective areas of your website. If you
have a page that you believe is important, but visitors are
exiting it rapidly, that page needs attention. You could,
for example, consider improving the link to this page by
making the link more noticeable and enticing, or you could
improve the look of the page or the ease that your visitors
can access the necessary information on that page.

If, on the other hand, you notice that visitors are
spending a lot of time on pages that you think are less
important, you might consider moving some of your sales
copy and marketing focus to that particular page.

As you can see, these statistics will reveal vital
information about the effectiveness of individual pages,
and visitor habits and motivation. This is essential
information to any successful Internet marketing campaign.

Your website undoubtedly has exit pages, such as a final
order or contact form. This is a page you can expect your
visitor to exit rapidly. However, not every visitor to your
site is going to find exactly what he or she is looking
for, so statistics may show you a number of different exit
pages. This is normal unless you notice a exit trend on a
particular page that is not intended as an exit page. In
the case that a significant percentage of visitors are
exiting your website on a page not designed for that
purpose, you must closely examine that particular page to
discern what the problem is. Once you pinpoint potential
weaknesses on that page, minor modifications in content or
graphic may have a significant impact on the keeping
visitors moving through your site instead of exiting at the
wrong page.

After you have analyzed your visitor statistics, it’s time
to turn to your keywords and phrases. Notice if particular
keywords are directing a specific type of visitor to your
site. The more targeted the visitor - meaning that they
find what they are looking for on your site, and even
better, fill out your contact form or make a purchase - the
more valuable that keyword is.

However, if you find a large number of visitors are being
directed - or should I say misdirected - to your site by a
particular keyword or phrase, that keyword demands
adjustment. Keywords are vital to bringing quality visitors
to your site who are ready to do business with you. Close
analysis of the keywords your visitors are using to find
your site will give you a vital understanding of your
visitor’s needs and motivations.

Finally, if you notice that users are finding your website
by typing in your company name, break open the champagne!
It means you have achieved a significant level of brand
recognition, and this is a sure sign of burgeoning success.

How You Can Insert a Workable Form on Your Website

I am about going to show you how you can insert a form on your website. I want  to assume you want a form that must have the following fields: Name, E-mail address, Sex, and Tell us your views about our website. Now I am now going to walk you through the process of creating just this. I will be using Microsoft Front Page.

1. Place insertion point on the area of your web page where you are going to insert the form. Go to “Insert”, then “form” and then “form”. This action places the form box on your web page. Type the title of the first field (Name) just behind the “submit” button.

2. Now go to “Insert”, “Form”, and then click on “Textbox”. This places the Name field box into your web page. Press “Enter” on your keyboard (the “Submit” and “Reset” button moves to the next line”. Type E-mail Address and go to “Insert”, “Form” and click again “Text Box”. The “E-mail field box is also inserted. You can do this for every field that must have a “Text Box”.

3. The “Sex” field must however have what is called an “Option Button”. So this is exactly what you will click on for this field instead of “Textbox”. You will type “Sex”, then “Male” and then insert one option button, then type “Female”, and then insert the second option button.

4.  You will need a different type of form field (Text Area) for the last field name “Tell us your views about our school”. You can follow the same process above but in this case you will have to click on “Text Area” to insert the “Text Area” field box. You can then finally press “Enter” for the “Submit” and “Reset” buttons to move to the next line.

5.  You now need to define the field properties for each field box. You must do this for the fields to work properly. I am starting with the “Name” Field. Click on the box and then right click on it and in the drop down menu, click on “Form Field Properties”.

6.  A “Text Box” properties box appears. In the Name box, type a name to identify the text box. This internal name, which is not shown on the form, identifies the text box in the form results. It will be visible to the site visitor on the default confirmation page, which is displayed when you use a form handler rather than a custom script. If you want text to appear in the text box when a site visitor first opens the form, type the text in the Initial value box. In the Width in characters box, type a number indicating how many characters wide you want the box to be. In the Password field, click Yes or No to determine whether or not the field contains a password so its contents can be encrypted. Click the Style button to access other options for formatting your form using cascading style sheets as an inline style. If you click the “Validate button”, the “Text Box Validation box” will show up. This box allows you to include more properties for this form field. You can click okay after you must have defined the properties. NB: You will have to carry out this process for all the other “Text Box” fields in your form.

7.  You are now going to look at the options you have for the “Option Button” properties box. Double-click the option button or click on it and then right click on it. In the Group name box, type a name to identify the group to which this option button belongs. This internal name, which is not shown on the form, identifies the option button group in the form results. It will be visible to the site visitor on the default confirmation page, which is displayed when you use a form handler rather than a custom script. In the Value box, type the value to associate with this field. If this option button is selected, this value is returned with the form results, and is displayed on the default confirmation page. Click Selected under Initial state if you want the option button to be selected by default when a site visitor first opens the form. Click the Style button to access other options for formatting your form using cascading style sheets as an inline style. You can also “validate” this box just like we did under “Text Box” properties.

8.  You are to carry out the same step when you define the “Text Area” properties. You can do this now and see what you will get.

9.  It is now time for you to do the same thing for the “Submit” and “Reset” button. Click on it and then right click on it. Click on form field properties as usual. The “Push Button Properties” Dialog Box appears. In the Name box, type a name to identify the button in the form results when you receive them. This internal name, which is not shown on the form, identifies the push button in the form results. In the Value/label box, type the text that will appear on the button. In the Button type box, select “Submit” if it is not already selected. Click the Style button to access other options for formatting your form using cascading style sheets as an inline style.

10.  You should also do the same for the “Reset” button

11.   When you must have carried out this process for all the fields, you are now ready to define the form properties for the whole form. You can click on the “Submit” button (you can actually use any of the form fields to do this), then right click on it and then click on  “Form Properties”

12.  In the “Form Properties” Box that appears, select the “Send to File name check box if it is not already selected and copy the e-mail address where you want the form result to be sent to in the “Email address” box (if you want the form results sent to an e-mail address). You can leave the file name as it is in the “File name” field. You should also enter the form name in the “Form name” box.  You should only select the “Send to other” check box if you want your form result sent to a database and not an e-mail address. You can leave the “target frame as default. Click Okay when you are through. You don’t have to define “Form Properties for all the fields as done when you defined “Form field properties”. When you do this for one of the form fields, it appears for all the other fields.

You have created your first form and I must let you know that for your form to work properly, you must publish your site to a server that has the “Microsoft FrontPage extension” – Your hosting company will tell you more about this. You can as well verify from them if they have this as part of the hosting package.
